I am a Certified Specialist in Criminal Law (Fachanwalt für Strafrecht) and have worked exclusively as a criminal defense lawyer for more than two decades. The focus of my work lies in extradition law and in international criminal justice. I defend clients nationwide and internationally against extradition requests, European Arrest Warrants and Interpol notices.
My law firm is located in the center of Kiel, in the immediate vicinity of the Regional Court Kiel (Landgericht Kiel) and the Higher Regional Court of Schleswig-Holstein (Schleswig-Holsteinisches Oberlandesgericht). I represent clients, however, before all German Higher Regional Courts and act nationwide.
Specialization
Extradition law is a highly specialized field at the interface of criminal law, constitutional law, European law and international law. I am one of the few German lawyers who concentrate on this area. My practice covers the defense against European Arrest Warrants in EU extradition proceedings (Sections 78 ff. IRG), the defense against international arrest warrants from non-EU states (European Convention on Extradition, bilateral treaties), the deletion of Interpol Red Notices and diffusions at the CCF, the deletion of SIS alerts at the BKA and abroad, taking over enforcement as an alternative to extradition (Sections 48 ff. IRG), constitutional complaints before the Federal Constitutional Court (Bundesverfassungsgericht, BVerfG) as well as the defense against international mutual legal assistance requests.
Experience and results
In my more than 20 years of practice I have successfully conducted numerous extradition proceedings. I have been successful many times before the Federal Constitutional Court — with interim injunctions and constitutional complaints that have stopped extraditions. At the Commission for the Control of INTERPOL's Files (CCF) in Lyon I have obtained the deletion of Red Notices that were based on politically motivated alerts. Results before the BVerfG
My defense is distinguished by meticulous legal analysis, rapid responsiveness and the willingness to exhaust every remedy — from a detention review application before the Higher Regional Court (Oberlandesgericht, OLG), through the constitutional complaint, to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR).
Memberships
I am a member of the European Criminal Bar Association (ECBA), the International Bar Association (IBA), the Strafverteidigervereinigung Schleswig-Holstein and the Rechtsanwaltskammer Schleswig-Holstein. Through my membership in international lawyers' organizations I have a network of correspondent lawyers in numerous European and non-European states.
How I work
I defend exclusively as a privately retained defense lawyer on the basis of a fee agreement; I do not take on court-appointed defenses. I accept only selected privately retained mandates — because extradition law requires highly specialized expertise and I want to devote to each case the depth and procedural quality that this matter demands. I am personally reachable — around the clock, including on weekends and public holidays. In an emergency — for example following an arrest at the airport — I respond within minutes.
Communication takes place in German and English. Where needed, qualified interpreters for further languages are brought in.
